Cueva Las Canalejas in Galera

Cueva Las Canalejas is a wonderfully quirky 2-storey cave with lots of traditional character and great views of the beautiful village of Galera and the Sierra de Cazorla mountains. This property offers three outdoor spaces! There is an open front patio, an enclosed front patio, and a wide balcony terrace on the upper floor. Downstairs, the cave comprises a living room, kitchen, bathroom and 2+ bedrooms. Upstairs are 3 bedrooms and the terrace.

The open patio can accommodate parking and a sitting area. The enclosed patio is a cosy, private outdoor space with a BBQ, sink, and wood storage. With a little updating it could be a delightful summer kitchen. Conversely, a roof could be added, to make an additional room. Each patio has a doorway into the house. Two of the upstairs bedrooms have doors to the terrace.

The main entrance takes you into a central front hall. The living room is to the left, with a wood stove insert and built-in cabinet. Through the living room is a bedroom.

Straight back from the entrance is a suite of 2 bedrooms and a partially reformed storage room or workshop. This suite could be transformed into a dining room or office, followed by a bedroom + large wardrobe.

To the right from the entrance, a staircase leads upstairs. To the far right, a little hall leads to the kitchen, the enclosed patio and the bathroom.

On the way up the stairs is a very large bedroom to the right. At the top of the stairs are two bedrooms, each with a doorway to the terrace. One of the bedrooms has a quirky inside window that opens through a wall onto the staircase. This inside wall was the original exterior wall of the cave house. The spacious balcony terrace offers peaceful, distant views.

The condition of the cave is basic and it could benefit from some updating. The house is decorated very simply and is sold with little furniture. A nice traditional feature is the curtains hanging at the entrances to the living room and two of the bedrooms. In wintertime, the thick curtains can be used to hold in the heat or minimise the space you need to heat. You could choose to enhance this traditional style or you could decorate this cave with your own personal style. It’s a palette that’s open to your creativity. Either way, there’s lots of potential.

This delightful property is located in a cave neighbourhood in the heights of Galera, a small village on the Altiplano de Granada. Galera has a few shops, bakers, bars and restaurants, doctor's office, post office, a weekly market and a summer swimming pool. The town of Huéscar is a 15 minute drive with more amenities and a 24 hr health centre. Surrounded by several natural parks, there are great options for hiking and mountain biking. There are pristine turquoise lakes within 20-45 minutes, and two natural spring water swimming pools within a 10 minute drive.
