Cartagena, a wealth of history and beautiful architecture sits on the Costa Calida in south east Spain within the Murcia region. It is a major naval base with the navy occupying a large area around the port and throughout the city. It is Spain's 6th non-province capital city with a population of approximately 214,918 in 2011.Cartagena was founded around 227 BC as Qart Hadasht during the Phoenician Conquest.Since the 16th century Cartagena port has been one of the most important naval ports in Spain. The port is also home to a large naval shipyard and is now a popular stop off point for cruise liners. The port and marina area is well worth a visit with its many bars and restaurants and it is only a short walk to the pedestrian main street with further many shops, bars and restaurants. Among the Art Nouveau buildings there are several famous landmarks such as the Roman Theatre. Cartagena is famous for its Carthaginians and Romans festival held on the second fortnight every September. Ten fantastic days of parades and events based on the second punic war. A visit to the large outdoor camp constructed specially for the event is not to be missed with its vast range of bars and restaurants.
